Code of conduct

This code sets out the standards expected of every CIBET member and representative, and how concerns are raised and handled.

Standards

  • Act honestly and with integrity in all dealings connected with the Council.
  • Treat other members, Secretariat staff and guests with respect. Harassment, discrimination and intimidation are not tolerated.
  • Represent your experience, qualifications and organisation accurately.
  • Respect confidentiality. Sessions held under the Chatham House Rule stay under it.
  • Declare conflicts of interest, particularly when sitting on a committee, a panel or an award jury.
  • Comply with the law in every jurisdiction where you operate.

Use of the network

The member directory exists so members can find each other. It does not exist as a sales list. Members must not send unsolicited commercial messages to other members, extract the directory, or pass member details to third parties.

Raising a concern

  1. Write to [Insert complaints contact email] setting out what happened, when, and who was involved.
  2. You will receive an acknowledgement within [Insert number] working days.
  3. The Conduct and Ethics Committee reviews the concern. It may seek information from both parties.
  4. Both parties are told the outcome and the reasons for it.
  5. Either party may ask the Governing Council to review the decision within [Insert number] days.

Possible outcomes

  • No further action, where a concern is not upheld.
  • Guidance to the member concerned.
  • A formal warning recorded on the membership file.
  • Suspension of membership for a stated period.
  • Withdrawal of membership.

Protection for those who raise concerns

A member who raises a concern in good faith will not be disadvantaged for doing so. Retaliation is itself a breach of this code.
